Netflix Orders ‘Grendel’ Series Based On Dark Horse Comic

With Abubakr Ali To Star



From Deadline:

Netflix has given an eight-episode series order to Grendel, a series based on the masked vigilante from Matt Wagner’s popular, award-winning Dark Horse comic book series, with Abubakr Ali (Power Book II: Ghost, Katy Keene) set to star in the tite role.


With Ali’s casting, he becomes the first Arab Muslim male actor to portray a series lead in a comic book adaptation.


The series, written and executive produced by Resident Evil and Supernatural alum Andrew Dabb, comes out of Netflix’s first look deal with Dark Horse Entertainment.

Casting director, Jen Euston, said on Twitter a few hours ago:

"I had no idea that when we cast the extremely talented [Abubakr Ali] that he would be the first male Arab Muslim to portray a comic book lead. 

"It’s 2021 and we shouldn’t be the first, but I’m proud to have been a part of it."


Actor Abubakr Ali then responded:

"Shout out to the real life superheroes who’ve been out there paving the way and making more of this possible, [Riz Ahmed, Ramy Youssef, Hasan Minhaj, Mahershala Ali]. 

"Praying for the day we start opening more doors to see more of our Muslim women and non-binary talent on these lists."

Why Naqib in The Boys sucked

The Sandman has great LGBT rep

(Pause to stare long and hard at Disney.) - The Sandman TV show on Netflix is a live action adaptation of Neil Gaiman's comic book, in the same universe as DC characters such as Lucifer Morningstar and John Constantine. The Sandman clearly shows us what good LGBT representation can look like, if studios like Marvel/Disney weren't so terrified of embracing it. - Note: 'Good' does not necessarily mean that all the LGBT characters are good/pure heroes or without flaw.
